What is the 1 Day Comprehension Crash Course?
This crash course takes students through the key elements of the comprehension paper to achieve their best in the 11 Plus entrance exams. It looks at the different question types commonly featured in the exams, reinforcing their knowledge and teaching key strategies to closely read the passage and respond in a manner aligning with the standards set by their prospective schools.
The lessons provide essential guidance in what takes up the majority of the 11 Plus English paper. It covers materials from the syllabus used by GL, ISEB, CEM, CSSE and other independent school boards. Over the space of a day (10am -3.30pm), your child will sharpen their skills in retrieval, inference, analysis and working with unseen prose.
How is the 1 Day Comprehension Crash Course structured?
The day begins with an introduction to comprehension, outlining the different question types and formats of the exam (including both written and multiple choice comprehensions). The children will take part in fun drills of skimming and scanning, getting them ready for the five lessons of the day.
Your child will then work through five sessions which cover the main aspects of the 11 plus comprehension paper:
- P.E.E and Inferences
- Identifying figurative language devices
- Conflict, Plot and Structure
- Character Analysis
- Poetry and Poetic Devices
After the course is completed, you will receive an in-depth report of your child’s performance throughout the day’s sessions. This will highlight any strengths and weaknesses we have identified and provide recommendations for them to further their learning at home. We will also provide you with a mock test paper, suited to the school which you are applying to for your child to complete at home, which we will mark and provide feedback on so you can have a better understanding of your child’s academic standing.
