Before deciding when to start preparing, it’s crucial to understand the nature of the 7 Plus exams. Each school decides the subjects tested and the weighting of the assessments. Typical topics assessed include English, mathematics, verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, listening skills and interviews in a group or individually. The purpose of these exams is to evaluate their potential for entry into highly competitive independent schools such as City Junior School, King’s College School, Latymer Prep, Westminster, JAGS and much more. When to start preparing for the 7 Plus exams
It’s never too early to lay the foundation for academic success. By fostering a love for learning from a young age, you can provide your child with a solid educational base. Encourage curiosity, engage in educational activities, and read together regularly. Therefore, informally, we recommend ensuring your child has a solid foundation before embarking on any official preparation.
Informally, you can help your child to:
- read fluently and independently
- learn new vocabulary
- practise their handwriting
- become fluent in arithmetic and confident with reading/writing numbers
- learn the basic shapes and their properties
Formally, we recommend children start preparation from the start of Year 1. This allows for a gradual and comprehensive approach, giving your child ample time to develop the necessary skills. Many parents seek professional tuition such as one to one tuition, group classes or courses to assist them in 7+ exam preparation.
Even though we offer all three options, we prefer to recommend children to an appropriate course of action only after discussing the child’s current ability with the parent.
