What is it?

What is the 5 Day 10+ October Course?

Our 10+ October Half Term Course is built to provide your child with all the information, techniques and confidence required to be a successful candidate for your chosen schools’ entrance exams. Over the week, your child will revise and harness their skills in a class environment, filling in any remaining gaps in knowledge and bringing their existing knowledge to a more advanced level. The course is based upon the most popular topics for the entrance exams; mathematics, creative writing, comprehension and exam technique are all covered.

How is our online course structured?

Our 5 day course runs from Monday to Friday with 4 hours of instruction per day and is managed by our course instructors who possess over 20 years of experience in exam preparation collectively. Students receive 4 hours of lessons daily over 5 days between the hours of 10am and 4pm in Maths, English, Verbal, Non verbal reasoning, exam technique and interview skills. Each lesson is taught by live and experienced tutors using video calling and an interactive whiteboard and students will benefit from saving time on travelling costs. All classwork, homework, mock exam papers, assessments, online practice questions/assessments are included and will be posted to students prior to starting.

Mock exams take place at the beginning and end of the course, enabling you to see where your child is at the outset, and then gain insight as to how they progressed throughout the course. It also allows us to pinpoint any of your child’s sticking points, as well as their general strengths/weaknesses, so we can best provide help in reaching their potential.

These one-week intensives are perfect for making the most of your child’s October half term, especially as so many students have missed out in schooling over the past months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the intensive tuition, the class environment and lesson structure is built to be fun and engaging. This means that your child will be happy to learn, and more often than not, leave with a smile on their face and some new friends.

You can book for the entire week or book full days focusing on Maths, English or Reasoning. Here is a breakdown of the topics we will complete per day.

DAY ONE ENGLISH (Content skills)

The first day of English is dedicated to everything concerned with creative writing. The skills, tools and features also double-up as a guide to reading with a writer’s eye – essential analytical skills needed for a sound comprehension approach. If your child struggles to write interesting creative pieces (that is, filled with excellent vocabulary and figurative language devices), or if they struggle with understanding the deeper meaning of texts, this one-day course will do wonders for them. The class sessions are hourly and cover the following four topics:

  1. Elements of Fiction
  2. Figurative language and Imagery
  3. Advanced Vocabulary
  4. Showing and Telling
DAY TWO ENGLISH (Functional skills)

The second day of English is focused on the technical aspects of English, where mastery is necessary to stand a chance at this level. Actual comprehension technique is covered – how to answer the questions correctly and how to maximise marks gained in particular. Moreover, sessions are centred around planning, structure and using mature writing techniques, advanced grammar and excellent punctuation. The class sessions are hourly and cover the following four topics:

  1. P.E.E and Inferences
  2. Advanced Punctuation
  3. Structure, Planning and Paragraphing
  4. Sentence Variation

On the third day, your child can benefit from reviewing a range of important additional exam elements. Starting off with interview skills, we help students with their approach towards interviews, making the real thing seem much less daunting, and giving feedback in the process. We also review overall exam technique, with a view to raising awareness of timing, safe shortcuts and reviewing one’s work effectively. The day’s lessons round off with a crash-course on both types of reasoning, looking at how technique can help to improve performance in these kinds of exams.  The class sessions are hourly and consist of the following four topics:

  1. Interview Skills
  2. Exam Technique and Process of Elimination
  3. Perfect VR
  4. Perfect NVR
DAY FOUR MATHS (Core skills 1)
Day four sees a full recap of essential core skills in maths. We move from the most fundamental principles of number work, through the topic-trio of fractions, decimals and percentages. This foundation then helps to access the subsequent topics of ratios, sequences, statistics and probability. All of these topics need to be mastered as they are found in virtually every exam taken at 11 Plus level. We focus on the most efficient techniques to perform operations and solve problems, with a focus on speed, accuracy and error checking. The class sessions are hourly and consist of the following four topics:
  1. Numbers
  2. FDP (Fractions, Decimals & Percentages)
  3. Ratios and Sequences
  4. Statistics & probability
DAY FIVE MATHS (Core skills 2)
The fifth and final day is reserved for the more tricky maths topics. Data handling and working with shapes are included, as well as delving into the complex realm of algebra. This day often helps to troubleshoot poor technique or understanding: Algebra can be a very difficult topic for many students to get to grips with, and so we have developed some useful strategies to help children feel more comfortable when working with substitutes. We also dedicate an hour to word problems – much as algebraic terms can pose difficult questions, standard English wording is often misunderstood or misread, costing candidates a lot of unnecessary marks. We also recap key vocab and techniques to help resolve potential problems before the big day arrives. The class sessions are hourly and consist of the following four topics:
  1. Handling Data
  2. Shapes
  3. Algebra
  4. Word problems

When and where?

Where is the course delivered?

This course is delivered online and is controlled by our teaching managers, with instruction given by experienced tutors, who follow our programmes closely, ensuring the best service possible. Students take live online classes with a tutor in small groups of 2-4 students. This range enables the teachers to give one-to-one support whilst maintaining the group dynamic which adds support and encouragement from peers.

For class sessions, we make use of an online interactive whiteboard alongside online video calling via Google Meet. This tried and tested method is very easy to use – and thanks to our years of experience working with students internationally, we now have a track record of effective online tuition with children from ages 8 to 18 in many subjects.

Advances in digital technology have been empowering for the educational sphere and children are usually more engaged and get more attention from our online classes than they would anywhere else (including school!)  Children tell us they like meeting other children from different schools who are also sitting the exam – working in a group helps children to become more comfortable and confident in a shorter time-frame.

When is the Online 10+ October Half Term Course?

We run several courses throughout the year. Our Easter holidays, May half term and October half term courses are one week long and are perfect for intensive revision. Each week long course does differ and is focused on a different set of skill sets that will greatly benefit your child in exams and in later life. We recommend your child repeat our 10+ courses at different dates in order to cover everything necessary for the 10+ exams.

Whilst over the Summer holidays, our courses are split by topic to deliver thorough instruction on dedicated topics in Maths (measurements, geometry, algebra, numbers, fractions/decimals/percentages and statistics) and English (creative writing and comprehension).

Jane and Andrew are very responsible and extremely helpful. Their tutoring is very effective and personalized. We sincerely appreciate their help. My son got offers from top London schools including CLS. Highly recommended!

Samuel Du

Really grateful to the team. My youngest attended courses for 11 plus prep and then we took up their online tuition to finish up with her and my son doing GCSEs next summer. I wasn’t too keen on online to begin with but it certainly does the trick. We have got places for our top three choices and feel very confident about the pending GCSE results. Very happy, highly recommended.

Steven Gayle

We are very happy with Jane and Andrew who are both professional and enthusiastic. My DS has passed all paper exams and were invited for interviews by all applied schools including SPB and CLS.

Y Zhao

Can’t recommend them enough. My son is more confident and is making amazing progress. He is no longer worried about mistakes and sees them as a learning opportunity thanks to Jane and Andrew. Brilliant feedback and tips from the staff too.
